Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Prolonged Use Of Nitrocontin Cause Any Side Effects?
I got angioplasty done 3 months and 1 stent was installed. Besides my BP medicines i was started with Nitroconten 2.6 twice a day. My BP was controlled, now day before yesterday on review my Doctor stopped my Nitroconten, but my BP shot up and i had to restart the Nitro. Does Nitro also reduce BP and does a prolong use have any side effects.
Nitrocontin (Glyceryl trinitrate) is a short-acting nitrate commonly prescribed in the treatment of angina pectoris (heart-related chest pain).
Its common side effects include headache, decreased blood pressure, increased heart beats, dizziness, lightheadedness and flushing which subside over a period of time.
On prolonged use it may cause 'tolerance' (decrease efficacy in preventing angina).
Tolerance can be prevented by intermittent use of nitrates with long nitrate-free intervals, use of nitroglycerin patches during the day or oral isosorbide dinitrate or isosorbide-5-mononitrate twice daily in the morning and early afternoon, and intermittent use of nitrates in combination with another class of anti-anginal drugs.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
