Does Radioactive Iodine Therapy For Hyperthyroidism Cause Sleep Apnea?
after being given the radioactive iodine for hyperthyroidism in January of 1986, when should I have expected to be hypothyroid. Also, once being diagnosed as being hypothyroid, what would been the earliest that I could have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The rate and time to hypothyroidism after RAI depends on dose and duration. The following points should clear your mind. About 15% to 20% are hypo at 2 years, this increase to 50% at 10 years and increases more with time. After an initial TSH, anualy TSH is done to detect those who would become hypothyroid. Though hypothyroidism is one risk for obstructive sleep apnea but very few people who have hypothyroidism develop OSA. Generally snoring is first appreciated by the partner before franchise OSA is developed but it's not the rule.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
