Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had my appendix removed in April and dropped 8 pounds after surgery and recovery. Now, it is September, and I have lost almost 20 pounds since surgery without changing my exercise routine or eating habits. Also, I feel much hungrier all of the time than prior to surgery but do not feel abnormal in any way. I recently had a battery of blood work done and everything came back normal. Is it possible that having my appendix removed increased my metabolism?
Removal of the appendix does not increase your metabolism. It is unusual that you are feeling more hungry after surgery, because appendectomy again does not increase appetite. Of-course if you were having chronic appendicitis, that would lead to right lower abdomen discomfort and you would not feel like taking much food. Removal of this appendix can thus give a feeling of well being and increase appetite. Once again you must consult your surgeon to know why in spite of increased appetite, you are loosing weight. This is very unusual. Doctor will advise specific investigations to see for the cause of unexplained weight loss and advise management.
