Does Schizophrenia Treatment Interfere With Liver Functioning?
I have a parent who is schizophrenic. I am trying to get her treated. I have been trying to get her treated from past 7 years. Due to the main reason of being suspicious towards everything, Somehow she is not willing to come and get herself diagnosed and start a treatment. Please suggest any ideas possible for her treatment.. Also heard of an injection paliperidone palmitate for schizophrenia, does it interfere with any of her liver functions.
First of all, Paliperidone does not affect liver function, but it should be avoided in the heart arrhythmias. So, you should do an ECG and ECHO on the heart before starting using this drug.
The patient with schizophrenia should do some investigations such as: Liver function test, Kidney function test, fasting blood glucose. Lipid profile and measuring blood pressure on the supine position, besides the patient's family history of hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia to assess the patient's health before starting the treatment.
We could give the patient a lower dose of anti-psychotic to treat him and monitor the organ functions through the course of the treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mustafa, Neurologist
