Does Severe Swelling On The Calf After An Injury Require Immediate Medical Attention?

Approximately a week ago I was getting out of my car and it was raining heavily. When I opened the door and was getting out the car door closed on my right leg at the calf. It has turned blue/black, severe swelling, very hard to straighten my leg when I stand, and hurts very bad to walk. Do you think I need to get this checked, and if so, what do you think I have done to it. I was a medical transcriptionist for 35+ years, so I will not have difficulty understanding any medical terms. Thank you so very much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If you remember any history of trauma to the leg than muscle injury or ligament or tendon injury like musculoskeletal pain could be possible.

However, if you don't have any history of trauma than it is medical emergency and you have to rule out deep vein thrombosis. The color doppler ultrasonography can be done to rule out deep vein thrombosis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
