Does Smoking Marijuana Cause Pain In The Gallbladder?
I’ve been having gallbladder flare ups which have increased lately - enough to send me to a&e last wk thinking I was having a heart attacks! About a wk before that my doc thought my symptoms were anxiety and prescribed anti-depressants and beta blockers - both made me feel ill so I stopped after 3 days and since then the emergency doc and another of my gp’s agree that it cud be gallbladder pain I’m experiencing. Have been referred for ultra sound. I gave up smoking marijuana about 2 moths ago as I thought the attacks I was having which I know now are gallbladder related, we’re actually panic attacks brought on by marijuana. My question is will smoking marijuana ( thru a pipe) cause gallbladder pain?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
My thoughts and suggestions are as below. Smoking marijuana can cause contraction of the gall bladder related structures to cause the pain but the commonest can be related to the contractions of the intestines too. It is good that you stopped smoking Marijuana, do not start it. Get an ultrasonography of the whole abdomen and also X-ray of abdomen, particularly when you are in pain. Get liver and Pancreas function by blood tests. HIDA scan if advised. Clinical evaluation by a General Surgeon so that a proper diagnosis and further management can be done. If the problem is confirmed to be related to gallbladder then get it removed by Surgery.
Hope I have answered your query.
