Does Smoking Induce Or Inhibit Fibroids?

Thank you. I am a 41 year old woman who has benn diagonosed with firoids and need an operation. Untill now i have smoked very liitle and now wont go near them because of my fibroids. My friend told me that cigarettes have aboslutly no connection with causing or affectiing fibroids and in fact studies have shown that smokers have a reduced risk of getting fiboids. is this true and if so could it actually be beneficial for me too smoke a few cigarettes a week?

Hi,

Yes, there has been some research to show that smoking may be associated with a lower risk of uterine fibroids, but I do not think that should be reason enough to resume smoking. Smoking reduces the estrogen levels in the body which then reduces the risk of fibroids as fibroids are sensitive to estrogen. The benefit on your fibroids is likely to be minimal compared to the harm to rest of your organs. So, in my opinion, please remain abstinent.

Best wishes.
