A 16 yo scheduled to have a HIDA scan was cancelled and told she had had sex in the past 10 days, the sperm would interfere with the test. Pregnancy test was negative. I am a radiology nurse with many years of experience and I have never heard of such a thing.
Recent sexual activity is unlikely to influence results of a HIDA scan. The HIDA scan is a nuclear scanning test that is done to check gallbladder function. The scan can find blockage in the tubes (bile ducts) that lead from the liver to the gallbladder and small intestine (duodenum). If the patient is pregnant then it needs to be cancelled.
