Does Sudden Withdrawal From Xarelto Cause A Stroke?

I was on Xarelto for the last 2 years due to AFib. I recently experienced a pinch nerve and my regular physician instructed me to stop it due to an interaction to a medication he was prescribing. That was 4 weeks ago and I just remembered that I was supposed to check with my cardiologist to see if I should continue with it or stop all together. Now I m worried about strokes - should I take a Xarelto tonight and just discuss this with my cardiologist as soon as possible?

Hi. Good to see your concerns about your health. Yes you need to continue the blood thinner therapy (xarelto). But before that your need to consult your cardiologist to discuss about the possibility of having a short course of short-acting anti-coagulant agent (heparin). The reason behind this is basically mechanism of action of xarelto(warfarin). It blocks both vit.k dependent factors both promoting and stoping the coagulation(clotting) process. But the factors stopping the clotting process are blocked earlier and factors that promote the clotting process are left unopposed for a while. This leads to increased risk of clots formation during an initial period of warfarin therapy and heparin given during this period prevents the clotting process during the initial phase of warfarin therapy.
Hope these lines might help you have a better understanding of your health.
Wishing you best of health.
Regards.
