Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Taking Amlodipine And Simvastatin Together Cause Myopathy?
I am taking 2.5 mg amlodipine besylate in morning and 40 mg simvastatin with dinner. Frequently have cramping of feet and/or calves during night. concerned that drug combination my be causing myopathy or rhabdomyolysis due to multiplying effect of the amlodipine. Should this be a concern?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Interaction between Amlodipine and Simvastatin has been found to be moderate. These medicines may cause some risk when taken together. Amlodipine may slow down the processes of Simvastatin metabolism and disposal in the liver. Thus, the levels of Simvastatin may build up in your blood. This may cause damage to your muscles. This may increase the potential risk of muscle damage/breakdown (myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Limiting Simvastatin dose to not more than 20 mg/day might help to overcome the adverse reactions.
Kindly consult your doctor for the change in the medication or dosage and follow the advise accordingly.
Hope the information provided helps.
All the best.
Regards,
Dr.Ashakiran.S.
