Does Taking Vancomycin Cause Fecal Incontinence?

I started taking the Vancomycin today (2 doses) and this evening had a sudden large forceful bowel movement which was uncontrollable. It was tarlike in consistency. Should I advise my current physician -- and is this normal?? (Otherwise, I am a 95 year old, healthy and weight is approximately 145 lbs.) My email IS pharold1 @ frontier.com

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Vancomycin won't cause fecal incontinence, may be vancomycin may cause altered gut flora which may lead to gas formation and bloating of stomach lead to incontinence. It may be due to allergy or food Intolerance. Use probiotics twice a day for five days, avoid alcohol. If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
