Hello and thank you for asking HCM.
I have read your history and will try to explain everything.
Protonix is a proton pomp inhibitor (PPI) .It reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. There is no evidence that Protonix or any other PPI can lower the iron levels of our body.
Taking PROTONIX or other PPI for a long period of time, over 3 years, there is a small possibility of having vitamin B-12 deficiency since stomach acid is needed to absorb vitamin B-12 properly.
It would be great if you could give me more info on your CBC levels before the transfusion.
For my opinion, there is no way that using PROTONIX caused this side effect, ending in ER and taking a
blood transfusion.
-You already, when you started the protonix were anemic.
Anemia refers to a decreased number of circulating red blood cells and it has a lot of reasons, but in your case probably due to a gastric or
duodenal ulcer.
I suggest you do an EGD (
esophagogastroduodenoscopy) to confirm the diagnosis of the ulcer. If this test is negative, than you need to do some other tests to find the reason why you had such a severe anemia that you needed a blood transfusion.
If you have any other question, feel free to contact me.
