Does Taking Weight Gaining Milkshakes Cause Swallowing Difficulties?
My friend has been drinking a weight-lifters weight gaining milkshake and got a severe problem as a result. He can no longer swallow. He has been hospitalized for days. Besides the doctors thinking it may have something to do with his esophagus, they can not find a solution. He remains in the hospital with no results.
Usual protein supplements can provoke GI upset as bloating, diarrhea or indigestion, but the swallowing difficulties has not been documented. However, there can be effects of certain toxin as Botulinm or else which an be ingested in certain food stuffs as preserved nuts or else ; which can provoke acute respiratory muscle paralysis and the same presentation. However, a detailed history, physical examination and necessary lab tests with X-ray chest is mandatory to comment further regarding the same.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
