Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I developed kidney stones after using Topiramate to treat my Seizure Disorder. Is there a connection between the occurrence of the kidney stones and my using the drug Topiramate? I never had kidney stones before the use of the drug Tpoiramate. No one in my family has ever suffer from kidney stones. I was told by the Neurologist that developing kidneys stones was a slight side effect from the use of the drug
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Topiramate is an anti seizure drug also used as mood stabiliser. The drug is known to control seizures effectively in some individuals especially in those associated with headache. Yes the drug is known to cause Calcium Phosphate stones in kidneys. The drug is known to cause acidosis which cause reduced citrate excretion and increase in ph of urine which results in stone formation. So even if you have no family history and personal history of stones still the drug can increase the risk. This is the reason it is advised to take plenty of water to the patients while on Topiramate. If the stones are recurrent the consult your doctor to change the drug if possible.
