Does Thyroid Issue Cause Any Problem In Functioning Of Liver?

My son has thyroid problem and was said to have Graves 2 years ago and his new Doctor says maybe Thyroididess.He now has liver problem which may be linked to Thyroid or medicine he taking. Not sure which it is and wonder how the liver can be affected by the Thyroid?

Hi,
It could be both.

Hyperthyroidism can cause altered liver enzymes, anti thyroid drugs also cause altered liver function.

In my practice I usually do a liver function test before starting medications if I am in doubt.

If the liver functions are altered due to medications it is better to stop the medication and opt for other treatments, radio iodine or surgery.
