Dr Chowhan,
My father, 79 years, last week had a near total thyroidectomy done. He was having severe tracheal compression due to the goitre. Goite was first detected in 2002. He's recovering well now. Howsoever, the biopsy results have now come in and the tumor has been found to be malignant. He'll be given radioactive iodine around end June. My queries:
What's the success rate of radioactive iodine, how's it given, is patient isolation required, is hospitalization required or can it be given in OPD, side effects, success rate, frequency of the treatment, things we should watch out for?
Is there weight gain post thyroidectomy ? What are the precautions we should take ?
His voice currently sounds a bit heavy / hoarse ? Is this normal immediately after surgery ? He has no pain though.
Await your inputs. Thanks.
