Does Vitamin B12 Supplement Cause Loose Stool?

Hi - I have had a loose stool problem for about a month now. A friend of mine said it could be caused by my taking Vitamin B-12. I added B-12 to my routine of other vitamins less than a year ago, but didn t have the loose stool problem until recently. Could the B-12 be the problem? - Joyce

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
There's no evidence that Vit B12 causes loose motions.
The usual causes of loose motion are an infection or an irritable bowel syndrome.
For a beginning get a stool routine examination, stool for occult blood and a complete blood count done and let me know the results.
In the mean while avoid foods rich in fats and spicy foods. You may also choose a low residue diet to decrease the stool volume. Drinking tea without milk may help as it contains tanates which are binding and decreases bowel movements.
Kaolin pectin also works similarly.

Do get back to me with the results
