Does Withdrawal From Levothyroxine Cause Anxiety And Panic Attacks?

Does withdrawal from levothyroxine cause anxiety and panic attacks, or are the withdrawal symptoms I m experiencing solely from taking too high of a dose of WP thyroid (natural porcine thyroid med)? I am a 57 year old Caucasian female. My doctor is on vacation, which is why I m reaching out to you. I took levothyroxine for approx. 30 years, but when I started going through menopause, I started feeling very horrible. I went to a naturopath and she said I might feel better on natural thyroid. She started me on 1 grain. I took it for 18 days. After the first week, I could tell I was over medicated. I was terribly anxious, my body was vibrating, I couldn t sleep, I was having panic atttacks, and felt generally unwell. A blood test confirmed that my levels of T3 were too high..My doctor advised me to go off the WP Thyroid for a week before starting a lower dose. I want to make sure I m not going to have a heart attack, stroke, or go into a coma due to stopping all thyroid meds so suddenly. Can you help me? YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for writing.

I can understand you concern and would try to help you in the best possible way.Your symptoms may be related to excess thyroid that you were taking. I suggest you should stop taking the natural thyroid supplement and continue with the reduced dose levothyroxine as prescribed by your doctor.

Also keep in follow up with your doctor and get your thyroid levels checked often till your medications are optimised.
