I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant and I had an xray on my lower half checking for cyst. On May 13th 2011, I completed an ultrasound first and they asked me to sign a consent form before completing the xray. Before signing I told the xray tech that I don t know if I m pregnant and she asked the ultrasound tech who stated no. May 21st I found out I was pregnant...should I be concern if the xray will cause long term problems for my baby?????
The amount of radiation from a simple X-ray will not harm a developing fetus. The amount of radiation you would need to harm the baby is as much as 20,000 X-rays. Many radiologists make pregnant women sign a waiver for tests but it is really to try to absolve them from liability, not because they are actually at risk. The American College of OBGYN has a committee opinion (www.acog.org) that explains the safety threshold for radiation in all diagnostic tests. I hope this was helpful and don't worry- your baby will not be affected by the X-ray you had.
