Down Syndrome. Rashes On Neck, Eczema. On Amoxicillin. How Did She Get Infected?

my nine yr old daughter with Down Syndrome started with a rash on her neck just below the ear and forward around to the other ear - raised rash. We have had no change in soaps or anything. no fever. no new foods. Finally took her to md last Friday and was told it was Eczema and was tx hydrocortisone. She then developed a rash and sore on her genitalia to the point where she resisted going to the bathroom because it hurt - we went back on Sun - they tested for strep in the genital area - got call today that it was and an rx for amoxicllan has been called in - why would a 9 yr have a strep infection there - what kind of strep and how could she have gotten it?

Hi,

Your daughter is having Down syndrome.

There is an extra chromosome. It is also called trisomy 21.

There is delay in mental and physical developments.

There is a risk of development of many medical conditions.

Respiratory diseases,eye diseases,thyroid diseases,obesity,intestinal abnormalities,siezure, childhood leukaemia.

And most important is a susceptibility of development of infections.

Your daughter may be having irritant or allergic dermatitis on neck.and it may spread to genital area and followed by secondary bacterial infection.

You do not worry, simple measures may improve her condition.

Antibiotics with steroids in tappering dose will improve.

Local antibiotics oint. may be applied on infected areas.

Antiseptics like dettol may be used for bathing.

Immunobusters, vitamins and nutritious food should be given for the prevention of infections.

I hope your daughter might be benefitted.

However, you should remain in touch with consultant either dermatologist or paediatrician.

Thanks.
