Dry, Chapped Lips. Cure?

I woke up yesterday morning with dry lips which felt extremely chapped but would normally come off easily in the shower and lips would be fine after moisturizing. I rubbed my lips gently in the shower but it felt painful after which lead me to look closer and i noticed it was bright red and swollen. It looks like the skin growing back but it easily comes off in some areas. What is wrong with me?

Hello. You could be having a simple exfoliative problem of the lips, but sometimes it could also be something called lichen planus. A skin biopsy from the site would identify the problem. It is definitely a treatable condition.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Maruti Karale's  Response
Hello!

Dry,chapped lips are usually caused due to dehydration.

It is not necessarily always as a result of heat, as even cold and dry air can lead to lips getting cracked and chapped. This can be very easily resolved by the application of petroleum jelly. The jelly seals the pores of the lips, trapping in the moisture, thus leading to the lips staying moist and supple.

In other cases, there are medical problems that manifest as dry and chapped lips.

Apart from the weather, a vitamin deficiency could be the cause for dry lips.
Dry lips are usually a symptom of a deficiency of vitamin B2.
People who have calcium deficiency may also display cracked lips.

Adequate hydration is the first line of defense against chapped lips
Try applying petroleum jelly for a few days and check for improvement before you schedule a doctor’s appointment. You can also use some oils such as olive and coconut oils or essential oils on your lips.

Hope this will help you.
