hi there. i m writing because the last couple weeks i ve noticed my daughter nose become more congested and her voice is very nasal. she has crusty nose and is picking it often but appears that her nose is extremely dry. i ve given her her normal congestion medicine as well as saline spray but i have not seen much of an improvement. any suggestions on what it could be?
Hi and thanks for the query, If your daughter is 3 - 12 years old then she may be suffering from enlarged adenoids. Adenoids are situated behind the nose and perform immune functions. They frequently get enlarged in children and the condition called chronic adenoiditis is very common. Only if the problem persists and the nose block becomes very troublesome then the adenoids are surgically removed. There is no medical treatment for adenoids. Most children outgrow the problem and become symptom free when they turn 12 - 13 years. Other conditions affecting your daughter may be common cold and allergy of the nose. Do not use nasal decongestion drops for more than 5 days in children. It can aggravate her nose block. Please consult an ENT specialist to come to a diagnosis. Regards, Dr Kishori.
