Due For Knee Replacement Surgery. Accidentally Taken Two Plavix Instead Of One. Should I Postpone Surgery?

l am taking Plavix but l am having a knee replacement operation on Thursday next. l was advised to go on unseal for 10 days before the operation. I took one in the mourning and one at night instead of just taking one per day. Should l postpone the operation ?. (l mixed up my Micardis which l take twice a day and my Plavix which l take once a day)

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, One should stop taking Plavix tablets 5-7 days before any surgical procedure. This is to prevent a major intraoperative bleeding during the surgery.

I personally advice my patients to abstain from plavix a week before an elective surgical procedure.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Moustafa Saeed's  Response
Hi:
thank you for your question

I understand that you should stop the Plavix 10 days in advance of your surgery, so if you toke 2 tablets today that make only 7 days before your surgery, am I right?

having said that, the knee replacement surgery usually done with tourniquet on the thigh to prevent bleeding during the operation, but it is preferably to stop the Plavix 10 days in advance to reduce post op bleeding.

I will advice you to call the surgeon office and tel them about the accident and let them decide.

wish you successful operation
