Ear Infection, Drum Ruptured. Taking Augmentin. Can Large Dose Cause Liver Or Kidney Problems?
My son had a bad ear infection to the point where his ear drum ruptured. He was put on Augmentin 875mg twice a day. He has been down with viral gastro for the past nine days including a few hours in hospital on a drip to rehydrate after collapsing. I have since stopped those anticiotics. This seems like such a large dose can it cause problems to the liver or kidneys?
I am so sorry to hear about what your son is going through. Hope he gets better soon.
Augmentin is rarely indicated as a toxic drug to the kidneys or liver. It os always safe to use them. However, the dose of any drug should be closely adapted to the patient. The age and severity of the infection can see doses modified to higher or lower values.
Unfortunately, you have not given the age or weight of your so. Augmentin is gnerally prescribed at 40-80mg/kg. This means a child who weighs 10kg is eligible to up to 800mg depending on the above cited factors.
Stopping medication all by yourself is not always the best thing to do. Talk to you doctor if you have any concerns and get the problem fixed. Stopping is harmful because it allows the infection to continue and can lead to germs resistance. please, talk to you doctor an get the correction.
II hope this helps and guides you. I wish him well. Dr. Ditah, MD
