My mother in law has recently had a fall which since then has resulted in several more falls in quicker succession; and is now unable to move her legs when trying to stand up or walk. She is 88 and has a history of osteoporosis, however until 3 weeks ago was still active and going to the shops daily and taking bus rides. Prior to the new year she would swim twice a week, but this was stopped due to the prolonged bad weather making it difficult for her to get out as often. She has fallen a couple of times in the last year, then 3 weeks ago caught her feet on the carpet and stumbled backward, falling against the couch and bumping her back. She summoned a local carer to help her get up. My wife took her to the A E ward the following day after we found out however they discharged her after a few casual checks of the back and legs. Following this she fell four times in several days in quicker succession. We brought to our home over the weekend to help her about, and were very disturbed that she was unable to stand or even move her feet into a walking position. We took her back to A E where the same doctor did more of the same checks and also sent her for a chest X Ray and carried out blood and heart checks all of which were returned ok. They decided that she required Physiotherapy and arranged to have her in a NHS specialist Old age Physiotherapy unit where she has been for two weeks. Today she has had her second fall while being moved around by nurses and this has resulted in a bump and bleeding to the back of the head. Other symptoms that she describes (previous to this last fall) are:- A trickling in her head around the left lower ear and right temple above the ear, which comes on a regular basis (4 or 5 times daily). A lump in her hip Small amounts of pain in her leg A tightness of the ankles. She has had a hip and knee replacement many years ago in the right leg. We are concerned that she would be so active then be so incapacitated and are not getting any suggestion from the medical staff what may be the matter. Your help would be appreciated
