Experiencing Mood Swings, Depression And Suicidal Thoughts. Side Effects Of Citalopram. How To Reduce The Symptoms?

Hello Doctor,
A few months ago my then girlfriend (a doctor in Alabama) wrote me a prescription for citalopram (40 mg) which I took for about one month. I experienced severe side effects, including extreme mood swings, severe depression, and ever increasing suicidal thoughts. These symptoms have persisted and continue to worsen despite it being nearly two months since I stopped taking them. My question is twofold. 1) how can I help to relieve these symptoms and get my mind back to normal, and 2) considering that the prescription was given to me outside of a regular doctors visit and with no follow up care, what, if any, avenues are available to me for legal recourse against her?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,
welcome to Healthcare Magic.

You was having option to meet her for prescription. Your friend helped you in difficult time and you are thinking for legal action. I am worried she will stop helping her friends in future. Again you are seeking help on online platform, hope you will not take legal action against me (Kidding). In my view currently you should think more about depression treatment.

Self harm thought appear to due to depression in your case, rather than citalopram which you stopped 2 months back, in my view.

For treatment, It is better to meet nearby psychiatrist ASAP. In patient treatment best for you, considering self harm thoughts.

Wish you good health and all the best.
