Experiencing Pain In Inner Thigh , Buttock & Lower Back

I recently (2 WKS ago 3/28/14) started experiencing hip, inner thigh, buttock and low back pain. My family doctor wants to do an MRI to r/o herniated disc or protrusion. I rested last week (3-31-14 thru 4-6-14) and gently exercised (Extension exercises only ) and now feel much better. Do you think that an MRI is still necessary?

Hi there

A herniated disc may present in numerous ways and symptoms are caused by the nerve root being compressed at a particular level in the spine. Symptoms may vary from pain , numbness , constipation or symptoms of a urinary tract infection.
The fact that your symptoms have decreased since gentle exercise leads me to believe that your pain was most likely related to muscular spasm which you are relieving by stretching. The hip flexors (Iliopsoas) and hip extensors and rotators (Gluteals and pyriformis) are common muscles causing pain around the region you described.

I would suggest you continue exercising gently and only if need be take a skeletal muscle relaxant. Baclofen/Valium/Ativan are some relaxants which may assist. However , be sure you know the side effects as these are very sedative drugs.
