Extracted Wisdom Tooth. Having Swollen Jawline. Reason?

My concern is that I had a wisdom tooth extracted three months ago. Since that time in the exact same spot mu jaw line has been visiably swollen. There was a root and a root left after the extraction. I am now seeing an oral surgeon, who says he doesnt know why my face is swollen. This oral surgeon has thirty years of experience and is also a MD, with a stellar background. He is going to romove the bone that was left but has no plans to address swoolen jaw line. I am very concerned about this and appreciate any information you can provide. Thank You CD Scott

hi there,
am dr.surendran
nice to meet you here in HCMagic
Before removing a wisdom tooth, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. A general anesthetic may be used, especially if several or all of your wisdom teeth will be removed at the same time. A general anesthetic prevents pain in the whole body and will cause you to sleep through the procedure.
it usually swells after the surgery, but became normal after few days,,if any debris are left out it keeps on irritating and makes it to swell it over and over
kindly examine the area with the help of dentist
hope i helped your query

Hi,
Thank you for the query.
As you said there was root left after extraction , defintly thats the cause for the swelling . You have developed infection in the jaw bone which lead to the swelling along the jaw line .
I would advice you to take an x-ray of the extracted area and then see your dentist .
As x- ray will give the clear picture of the infection and its extent in the bone, an OPG would give a better idea about the infection instead of just an IOPAR.
Hope this information will help you.
Take care

hi and welcome,
After reading your history i suspect the extraction of the wisdom tooth was traumatic and the root piece was left unextracted in the socket or the bony prominence of the socket was not cleared which has lead to formation of swelling along the jaw line .
i would suggest you to get an OPG rdiograph done which will show you the exact cause of the swelling , accordingly the left over root or the bone remnant can be removed surgically.
i hope this helps you ,
take care.

hello & welcome
as you said that one root was left, so its very clear that infection is still inside.
so swelling may be there.
you please don't worry as soon as this infected root/bone will be out swelling will start subsiding.
rest don't apply anything by yourself on the swelled part.
further comments about problem can be added only after clinical & radiological assessment.
thanks & take care

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
As you wrote , pain after your wisdom molar extracted is something which needs to be checked thoroughly.
without checking clinically, i cannot suggest you any treatment but i would like to ask you to do warm saline rinses or betadine rinses, in order to relief some pain. your dentist might prescribe you antibiotics and anti-inflammatory only after ruling out the cause.
I hope this is helpful to you.

Dear friend

thanks for sharing your concern.

it is nice to know that your dentist is an experienced doctor.

you have said that root piece has been left unknowingly also a bone piece is left unfortunately.

anyways do not worry, these two things can be well managed by your dentist. the root piece should be removed after locating it and the left over bone has to be filed properly.

otherwise these things could lead to dry socket. again a painful situation. so get it done as soon as possible.

now coming to your query why your jaw line is swollen? that is because the left over root piece and the exposed bone together has led to infection, more or less similar to dry socket. that is why you have pain and swelling there.

i would suggest visit your dentist and he will take care of this infection. simultaneously start a course of anti biotic and analgesic too.

but your facial swelling needs immediate attention.

get an OPG done this might help you to see other infected teeth any fracture of jaw due to trauma or infection (osteomyelitis), cyst, tumour or any other pathology.

hope this helps.

meanwhile do warm saline rinses

thanks
