Eye Struggles To Open, Sinus And Allergies, Eye Is Watery. What Is The Reason?

Hi there, For the past couple of weeks my right eye has struggled to open in the morning. It feels like the muscles are weak or something. It only take a few seconds then it seems fine, however, it isn t opening as wide as my left eye and is feels slightly weepy. I do favour sleeping on my right side, squashing this side of my face but do try and roll over to the left at night. Over the past 6-12 months on/off my eye has been smaller, no pain though. I do ocassionally suffer from sinus and allergies. No previous eye problems, besides having astigmatism . I hope you can help. Thanks in advance. Rowena

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Pressure on one side of the face through the night does lead to fluid collection or oedema on the side of the face particularly the delicate eye area that is at a lower level. This gradually improves as the day progresses. Muscular weakness of the ocular area may be due to a few causes like myaesthenia , facial palsy, vitamin deficiency particularly in diabetics and even throid ophthalmopathy. however, there are often other complaints like double vision as well. Try to sleep on your left side or on your back for a few days. Use icepacks on the affected eye as well. Use an antiinflammatory eye drop preparation in the eye for a few days. The eye should revert to normal. if the condition fails to resolve or worsens, a few blood tests to rule out abnormal blood sugar levels and thyroid levels may be done.
