Feeling Jerking Sensation In The Body While Sleeping. Cause?

Hi, when I'm lying down resting, either naping or trying to fall asleep ,I experience jerking sensation's in different part's of my body, mainly in my arms or leg's, occasionally I feel these elsewere, these movements can vary from slight to extreme, sometime one extremity will jump, sometime it feels my entire body. I am 53 yrs' old.
