Flu Like Symptoms With Diarrhoea After Having Sex. Should I Be Worried?
Hey doc, I made the mistake of sleeping with a woman whose status was not only unkown, but a bit questionable. She performed oral sex on me unprotected and then we had vaginal sex three times in a row in different positions, each time with a new condom. Two weeks afterwards I developed flu like symptoms. Only a slight cough remained. At the four week point I vomited five times and had diarrhea and a long lasting fever. I am completely terrified about contracting HIV but I am only at the four weeks after mark. How much risk am I at? The sickness came on incredibly fast and lasted almost 24 hours. Please respond fast.
Although not impossible, it is rare to contract HIV from a single heterosexual contact, particularly if intercourse was perfromed with a condom. The symptoms are quite non specific, may be coincidental; there is this entity called acute serconversion syndrome, when a person does get infected by HIV and develops transient flu like symptoms, but again, its non-specific.
The best course of action would be to probably obtain an HIV serology now and repeat it at 6 months. Again, to give you reassurance the odds are less given the scenario you portray, but not impossible.
Hope that is useful, wish you the best,
Dr. Brenes-Salazar MD
