Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Food poisoning since Wednesday 2 am. Been seen and prescribed promethazine oral and supository. still can't eat with out it coming.up? Been drinking about 20 oz of fluid a day that stays down. At what point of not eating do I need to go back to the hospital or what should I be watching for that would cause a hospital visit?
Hello, thanks for the question. Food poisoning symptoms usually last for 48-72 hours in most cases. Promethazine should help control nausea & vomiting. You do need to keep the hydration good. Small amounts of sport drinks that contain electrolytes are good. You can take 2-4 ozs. of this every couple of hours. When you can keep solid food , start with gram crackers , sherbet or pudding. Keep it bland for a few days. If you continue to have lot of diarrhea and continued vomiting then you need intravenous fluids and further evaluation.
