Hello

The possible reason for increasing gap between your upper front tooth is
1. You probably have tongue thrusting habit. i.e your tongue pushes your upper front tooth whenever you swallow anything, or sometimes even when you are not swallowing anything your tongue is probably pushing your front teeth. when this happens the upper front teeth generally flare up and there will be increased space between your teeth. This can be treated by wearing a simple appliance which will not allow your tongue to come in contact with your teeth. To correct already formed space between your teeth you need to take orthodontic treatment (braces).

2. Second cause is gum disease, due to presence of tartar and plaque the gum disease would have developed (gingivitis and periodontitis), which would involve the underlying bone which supports the tooth. There will be loss of bone and that inturn would loosen the tooth. once the teeth becomes loose it tend to separate from each other and move front and result in spacing between your teeth. If this is the cause, you need to consult a periodontist, take treatment for gum disease and then take an orthodontic treatment.

3. Third cause is presence of high frenum (frenum is a fibre/muscle like tissue which starts from lips and attaches to gums). High frenum is when the frenum is attached in between teeth. whenever you speak, eat food, this frenum tends to exert pressure on teeth and presence of this high frenum can result in spacing between upper front teeth. If this is the reason, there will be spacing only between your two central incisors.

These are the possible three causes. However it can be any of the above three combinations or all the three conditions also can be present in any given individual.

Good news is that you can get it corrected with appropriate treatment

Take care

teeth are always in a state of flux though they seem to be constant but thy move a little bit .
the cause of the gap could be you have lost any tooth posterior to the front and so the posterior teeth are moving backwards to fill the gap.
more liukey could be due to frenum attachment wherein the frenum cause gap between the teeth. consult your dentist and he/she would severe the frenal attachment
for reverting back to your previous no gap position , you might have to take the advice of and orthodontist.

Hello & welcome,

The gap between Upper Incisors is called as Mid-line diastema in dental language & is mostly seen in those individuals who have Thick Labial frenum.

This may occur even with labial frenum with higher attachment between the upper two central incisors. Due to higher attachment, when patient smiles or talks, the labial frenum is stretched which in turn moves the central incisors apart from each other in opposite direction.

Another reason for mid-line diastema is having a tongue thrusting habit. Here patient moves the tongue forward against the upper central incisor teeth while swallowing or even talking thereby causing bi-maxillary protrusion. Teeth goes on protruding creating the gap between them due to the pressure applied by the tongue.

Periodontal or gingival infection specially in severe condition leads to bone resorption thereby creating the gap between the teeth.

If oral hygiene is not maintained properly by the patient, then food & plaque accumulation is associated with gum & periodontal diseases. There is calculus formation on the teeth surface which may harbor the infection involving the periodontal fibers causing the teeth to move apart.
Thumb sucking habit in childhood is also responsible for mid-line diaestema.

Visit your Orthodontist as soon as possible. He will clinically examine the condition to exactly determine the cause of the gap & treatment will be depending upon the finding.

You may have to undergo frenectomy if frenum attachment is thicker or higher in which only braces won't work alone.

Take care.

Hello there,

Thanks for your query.

Maxillary mid line diastema is a common esthetic problem.

There are following causes of such gap-

1. Malocclusion.
2. Poor fit between the teeth of upper and lower jaws.
3 Highly attached or thick labial frenum.
4. Presence of mesiodens, cyst,or any abnormal structure between upper central incisors.

So i would suggest you visit a dentist in your area and get the thorough clinical and radiological examination done of your oral cavity to rule out the cause.

Nothing to get worried,it can be treated.

Hope this answered your query.

Take care.

Hello Lakshmi,
Thanks for posting your query.
The gap between upper front teeth is usually due to high or thick frenal attachments.
This results in midline diasthema.
This will result in spacing due to the frenum attachment in between the teeth.
FRENECTOMY has to be done in such cases for diasthema closure.
Orthodontic braces and z-springs are inserted in such cases.
The gap will increase if left untreated.
So please do visit your dentist and get further treatment done.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Gaps in teeth can increase due to wrong placement of teeth and also if there is lot of tartar in teeth, resulting bone loss in the area around teeth causing drifting and increase in gaps. I would recommend you to visit a dentist and discuss your problem. The dentist may advice braces for closing tha gaps or scaling and polishing ie: cleaning of the teeth and removal of tartar along with certain adjustments in your bite(if required)so that the teeth stop drifting further.

hello and welcome to hcm forum,
i would be glad to answer your query, gap between upper front teeth is due to several reasons and accordingly treatment is planned, but you have not mentioned whether your parents have it or not.
usually its hereditary but there are other reasons as well.
i cannot tell you why or how is the gap increasing between your teeth, without checking clinically, but i would recommend you to visit an orthodontist, the gap can be closed if you want either with braces or with tooth colored restoration.
i hope you do not have or even had any oral habits (nail biting, thumb sucking, using tooth pick, biting over a pencil, etc.)
therefore visit your dentist ,
i wish you good health.
