Ophthalmologist 's  Response
hello,
welcome to HCM,
i am also an pediatric ophthalmologist,
yes this high Cyl power can be sign of keratoconus,
first of all i advise you to make sure that your son wears glasses all time because cyl > -2.5D can be amblyogenic i.e. decrease of eye sight.
i also advise you to visit cornea specialist and get topography done which will be conformative of keratoconus.
get his refraction every 2-3 monthly
if his spectacle number is incresing then you have to take treatment of k'conus like collagen cross linking ,or INTAS as advised by cornea specialist
take care, i hope i answered your query
you can ask further query
if number is progressing

Ophthalmologist Dr. Dadapeer K's  Response
Hello,
From the history you have given your son is having high cylindrical power and he is told to have keratoconus.
Keratoconus is a corneal thinning disease affecting the cornea leading myopic astigmatism like the refractive error power you have quoted here for your son.
Keratoconus most likely occurs in teenage, however it can occur in this age also.
Hemce I advice you to get tests like corneal topography to confirm the diagnosis.
If the diagnosis is confirmed I advice you to take treatment as advised as correction for the refractive error in this young age group is very important for normal visual development.
Thank you
