Greenish Discharge In The Incision After Hip Surgery. Having Low Grade Fever. Did I&D. Reason?
I had hip surgery a month ago and one of the incisions wouldn t heal...then the other opened up as well and greenish discharge was coming out. This Thursday doctor opened up both incisions and did an I and D (?) I am so sore I can t walk without crutches. My doctor is referring me to an infectious disease dr because something (organism) is growing from the cultures. I was exposed to MRSA right after my surgery. My body temp sometimes a low grade fever but all day today it s been 96-97.2 what do you think is going on?
Hi thanks for your post.
Possibly there is an ongoing bacterial infection suggested by low grade fever, non healing post surgical wound and the discharge.
Greenish discharge sometimes indicate infection due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but possibility of MRSA cannot be avoided as you have an earlier exposure. It could be a mixed infection also.
Best advise at this point of time is to get a culture of the discharge done and use appropriate antibiotics.
Use of proper hand hygiene is a must for all the persons who are taking care of the wound. Beware of the usual hospital disinfectants, Pseudomonas can grow inside them as well. Regular aseptic wound dressing with proper antibiotics at appropriate dose for right duration is a strict requirement.
All the best.
