Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Greenish Poop, Yellow. Is It Due To Cold? Or Due To Breast Milk?
My baby boy is 3 months old. For the past one week, his poop is greenish or greenish yellow and he is not drinking milk that often. He also looks tired. He had slight cold and times we see him giving noise while breathing . He is breast fed. I am not sure whether giving formula milk for few days will help him. Please advice.
It has been observed that infants do pass greenish yellow stools when they have upper respiratory tract infection. I do not think there is anything to worry about. There is no need to start formula feed.
Giving him steam inhalation will reduce his noisy breathing by opening up the nostrils.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
The colour of stools of a purely breast fed baby is bright yellow. However even if you have already given one or two formula feeds, the colour may change to green as the formula milk contains iron.Do not give plain water. If necessary, it should be filtered, boiled and cooled. If stools are associated with pus or foul smell, you should take your baby to your pediatrician.
As for the cold, try putting a drop of pure normal saline nasal drops( eg, nasivion mini), 1 drop, 1 nostril at a time to clear the block, and you may find the baby feeds and sleeps better. He may be tired due to disturbed sleep due to the nasal block. If your child continues to have poor feeding or develops fever, kindly take him to the doctor.
Hope your baby gets well soon.
Take care. bye
Your baby is 3 months old but equally important to know is whether his weight gain is adequate or not. The colour of the stools is not a cause of concern here as long as the baby does not have diarrhea. The baby has been unwell as you mentioned, and hence not taking well of late.
Noisy respiration could indicate a blocked nose and this could be affecting his feeds as well. You can try Nasivion P drops and see if your baby starts breathing normally in next 2 to 3 days.
You need not change the milk to formula feeds if your breast milk is adequate. Breast milk should be highly encouraged and you should always remain motivated to to nurse your baby. Mere illness in the baby is not a cause of stopping breast milk.
Hello
Passing greenish stool in a breast fed child may be normal. If the consistency and frequency of stool is not changed then no need to worry. A baby should be exclusively breast fed till 6 month of age unless medically advised. Put Nasoclear drop one drop in each nostril alternatively 4-6 times (particularly before feeds) a day to clear the nasal blockade. So I would suggest you to continue the breast feed and be watchful for change in consistency or frequency of stool, any fever.
If you notice any of these consult your doc immediately.
