hello,
have your wisdom tooth got erupted or is it still covered by a flap?
AS per the description given by you,it is still impacted and the flap overlying the tooth has infected which is known as
pericoronitis.there is food lodgement under the gingival flap.
it exhibits chronic inflammation for a long period.
if the debris and bacteria are deeply entrapped an
abscess may form.it is a mixed infection and various bacteria of dental plaque play a significant role.
pain and swelling of pericoronal tissue around the affected tooth, difficulty in chewing, difficulty in opening mouth are the usual complaints.mildly ill with fever,
malaise and regional
lymphadenopathy ,throat and
ear infection are the associated symptoms.
entrapped food debris must be removed.
a radiograph help in assessing the position of involved tooth.if horizonally impacted or if there is inadequate space ,the tooth must be removed.if it is in a favourable position, surgical removal of pericoronal flap should be done.
administration of antibiotics helps to relieve the symptoms and prevent spread of infection to adjacent tissue spaces.
