Gums Are Swollen, Red And Sore. Is It A Virus? Is It Common?

Hello, I feel like I have a virus but my gums are swollen, red and sore. I have no dental issues, I brush, floss each day and have my teeth cleaned every 6 months. I have perfect teeth. It has to be related to my illness . I have swollen glans on both sides of jaw. I get swollen glans when I don t feel well but this is the first time I have had my gums swell and turn red. Is this common?

Hello,
Thanks for writing in.
I read your problem,as you gave the detail it seems that you are suffering from a viral disease known as mumps.
The most common symptoms include-
1.parotid gland infection/parotitis.
2.Fever

4.Dry mouth which will leads to more tooth decay, gingival inflammation, sore mouth etc.
5.Sore face.etc.....
This could be because of contact with infectious person because it is a contagious disease.
So i will suggest you please visit to your physiscian and dentist for proper treatment because there is no specific treatment of this disease only symptomatic treatment is the solution.
mean while you can apply intermittent ice or heat to the affected area.

The swollen gums are probably an infection brought on by your suppressed immune system.

A chlorhexidine containing mouthwash and brushing underneath the swollen gums. (even if it is sore and bleeds) This will help to treat the gum related problem but visit your medical doctor to have the virus-like infection symptoms treated.

yes it could be mumps which is a virus caused disease causing inflammation of salivary glands and pain. take normal analgesics such as ibuprofen and like other viral attacks , it will subside. the treatment is as per the symptoms.

Hello and thank you for your question.
There are many causes for inflamed gingival tissue. Somes of these can be linked to lichen planus, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, leukemia, plaque, herpes simplex virus, strep etc. My best recommendation is to swish and spit 3% Hydrogen peroxide, floss and brush. I would also go to your doctor to get evaluated for your illness. I hope you feel better. I wish I could talk more but I would need more information.

Best regards and good health

Hello & welcome,
As your cleaning habits are quiet good enough & you get your teeth cleaned by the dentist every 6 months, then having swollen & sore gums due to local reasons is really not a possibility here.
Still you should check the technique of brushing which is more important than frequency of cleaning.
Even you are having swollen glands on both sides of the jaw , bad smell then more likely there is an underlying viral infection or any other systemic condition.
Visit your physician along with the dentist so as to undergo clinical & pathological examination which will be very helpful in further treatment.
Till then, maintain your cleaning habits well, use any local antiseptic mouthwash, avoid smoking & alcohol if having habits of the same & have a balanced diet.

Wish you good health.
Take care.

HI, your problem is referred to as gingivitis (swelling of gums) it can be due to many causes- any underlying infection, any blood disorder, hormonal imbalance etc.. You start rinsing with warm saline water 5-6 times daily (1tsp salt in 1 glass warm water) and massage your gums with tan-x gel before sleeping. Use an ultrasoft toothbrush and avoid hot and spicy foods.
take care

hello and welcome,
your gums are swollen due to gingivitis.
do you have any medical history of epilepsy or diabetes?in such cases due to the drugs used for treatment, there is incidence of gingivitis.
check whether your impacted wisdom tooth is getting erupted or is that area inflammed which is known as pericoronitis.
symptoms of pericoronitis are-
difficulty in chewing or swallowing food, difficulty in opening mouth, metallic taste in mouth, mildly ill with fever, lymphadenopathy, ear and throat infection.
visit your dentist and get the diagnosis.get scaling done.
if normal eruption of wisdom tooth is possible, flap over tooth can be removed by incision which is known as operculectomy.
if there is inadequate space for tooth eruption, surgical extraction has to be done.
take tab.doxycycline-100mg,once daily for 7 days to make your gums intact, firm and resilient.
regards
