I am 7 months pregnant.., i take an HIV test and VDRL test. My HIV test is "non-reactive" but my VDRL test is "reactive". What does this mean? Do i have a syphilisis? what are the symptoms of this? How do i know that i really have this?
HIV TEST NEGATIVE MEANS NO HIV.VDRL OR VENERAL DISEASE RESEARCH LABORATORY TEST IS A NON SPECIFIC TEST TO DIAGNOSSE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES LIKE SYPHLLIS,GONORRHOEA,DUCREY'S ULCER ETC.GET REPEATED TEST FROM ANOTHER LAB STILL POSITIVE TO DIAGNOSE SYPHLLIS YOU NEED TREPENOMA PALLIDUM (SYPHLLIS CAUSTIVE BACTERIA) ANTIGEN ANTIBODY ESTIMATION TEST .
Hi, These 2 tests are routinely done in pregnancy to ensure there is no infection in the mother that may be passed down to the baby. That your HIV test is negative means that you do not have infection with the HIV ( Human Immunodeficiency virus).
VDRL is an old test that is done for syphilis. This test is however not accurate and tends to give false results either way. It often comes positive in many conditions not related to syphilis, or in fact any infection at all. In medical jargon, it is called false positive.
I suggest that you take the test once again, preferably from another good lab. If it comes positive again, consult your doctor to find out if there is any underlying cause that needs to be addressed. Take care. GC
