Had A Bike Accident, Causing A Road Rash, Yellow Scabbing Around Outer Edge. Is It Infected?

I got in a bike accident on 3/23 and received road rash extending from my left wrist right past my elbow , and on my right knee . I ve been washing with soap/water and covering with bactin ointment, airing it during the day. The deeper parts are white/yellowish, though the wound is no longer weeping. It actually hurts less today than yesterday and swelling has gone down. However, I want to make sure it isn t infected. It s tender immediately around the wounds, and as I said, they re yellow/white, and scabbing around the outer edges.

thanks for writing to us.

Yellowish/white scabbing around outer edges of abrasion wound is part of normal healing process.Serous fluid coming out of wound gets dried up and is causing this yellowish scabbing.

Your wound is not infected as there is no discharge of pus.Continue treatment and regular cleaning and dressing of wound.Get booster dose of tetanus if not taken in last 5-10 years.It may take 7-10 days for complete healing.

You can take anti-inflammatory agents like voveran, emanzen-d for pain and rapid healing.

Consult your doctor if you get fever,pus discharge from wound.

The wounds when infected is characterized by discharge and fever along with delayed healing. The yellow which color is due to the fibrosis that is a stage in healing process. Continue with antiseptic dressings daily and the scabbing signifies the ongoing healing process
