Had A Polyp In One Of The Minor Hemroids, Family History Of Colon Rectal Cancer. Is This Normal ?

My family has a history of Colon Rectal Cancer.
I've had 1 colonoscopy done back in 2006, where they found a polyp, but it was not removed.
Ever since giving birth back in the 80's I've had minor hemroids.
Recently while checking them, I discovered a hard polyp in one of them.
Id never noticed before. It felt like a little hard ball.
My question is.
Is this normal, or should I be concerned?

Hello,
Thanks for writing in.

With a strong history of colon cancer in your family, polyps in your colon need monitoring and surveillance.
If you feel that there is hard polyp, please get yourself checked up by your doctor. A repeat colonoscopy may be needed since the earlier one was done 7 years back.
A polyp may also be biopsied if clinically indicated.

Prevention is the best.
Hope this helps.

General Surgeon Dr. Venkat Narayana Badipatla's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

You said that there is a history of colo-rectal cancer in your family. Now you are having hard polyp in your haemorrhoids. Usually polyps can be benign or malignant. Malignant polyps will be the precursor lesions in colo-rectal cancer. Also polys can occur in any part of the colon. So in your case you need a full examination of the colon by colonoscopy and if there are any polyps they need to be biopsied to look for malignancy. If there are many polyps in different parts of the colon then you may need a total colectomy as you have a strong family history of colorectal cancer.

Consult your gastroenterologist and get an evaluation of your colon with biopsy if required.

Good luck.

Pathologist and Microbiologist Dr. Kevin Manuel's  Response
Gastrointestinal polyps can either be benign or malignant. Colorectal carcinomas are commonly associated with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). I would suggest a immediate thorough colonoscopic evaluation and in case there are multiple or a single polyp, your gastroenterologist will biopsy it and send it for a histopathological examination. This will help in ascertaining the type of polyp, disease process and whether it is malignant or not.
