Had Accident. Having Severe Lower Backpain, Numbness In Feet, Leg, Tingling Hands. Lost Control Of Bladder, Bowels. Cause?

I am 53 yr old female, lower disc issues since 20's, degenerative disc disease, and head on collision with drunk driver in 2002 that seemed to worsen things. Have had lots of PT, back brace, injections, radio frequency, still in chronic pain. Last couple of weeks have had much more severe lower back pain, and numbness in feet, right leg feels numb from knee down. Hands tingling as well. Can not sit for any length of time, too painful. last week lost control of bladder a couple times at night. Today lost control of bowel. Very scary, and legs feel weak. Wondering what may have worsened to cause this. Waiting on insurance to approve MRI.

Dear Mam,

Sorry to hear about the incident.

See, you have degenerative disc disease and later after accident , it worsened.

Your accident happened in 2002 and now in 2013, you are feeling numbness and tingling in right leg and feet and also in hands associated with bladder involvement.

I can see from here that you have a nerve compression causing these symptoms, it can be due to degenerative disc, osteophyte or Lumbosacral radiculopathy, even it can be cauda equina syndrome. Possibilty of cervical involvement can't be ruled out.

You immediately need a full neurological examination and a MRI.

If you have frequent bladder control loss, you might need a catheterization.

Keep clininess and see you don't develop any bed sores.

Meet a neurologist soon.

Stay Healthy
