Had Accident, Fell On Arm. Hurts, Cant Extend Fingers, Swollen, Red. Ideas?

I was riding my moped early today going about 25 or 30. I hit the brake's too hard and flew over the front of the moped. I landed on my left arm and my right palm. It didnt really hurt that bad but my left arm has a dull ache. I cant pick anything up with my left arm without it hurting(tried to carry a a gallon of milk). The finger of my left hand cant extend all the way out either without hurting. I cant even extend them all the way out if I wanted too. My right palm hurt's on the bottom right side. cant turn it or bend it up. Bottom left hand side of my palm is swollen and red. Any Idea's? I hope it's nothing serious.

Hi, in all probability, you have a little sprain & the pain you experience is due to soft tissue trauma only. And it is hurting more because of the swelling in the hand- also it gives you a stiffness & difficulty in movements. Apply ice, keep moving your fingers (helps in circulation & reduces swelling) and DO NOT MASSAGE. But you should see a doctor and take x-rays to make sure that you don't have a fracture ( better to rule it out early).

Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Your symptoms could be due to
1. Fracture of metacarpal (MC) bone or phalanges in the left hand.
2. Carpal bones fracture of both hands.
The wrist region of both hands are affected as they have faced the entire brunt of injury.

Metacarpals are the long thin bones in the palm/ hand. Fracture of thumb is rare as the bone is quite mobile. The second and third metacarpal bones (index and middle fingers) act as anchors to the other fingers. Fracture of these MC bones or phalanges will prevent the full extension of your fingers. Swelling causes pain in phalangial (digit bones) fracture as there is very limited space in the digit.

Carpal bones are the small bones in the wrist. Among them, Scaphoid and Lunate bone fracture is more common in outstretched hand injuries. There will be pain and swelling around the wrist in case of fracture of carpal bones.

X-Ray of hand - AP (antero posterior), Lateral and Oblique view (to assess the angulation of fracture fragments as well as the involved joint surfaces) are necessary to determine the extent of lesion. The choice of the treatment depends upon the type of fracture.

If it is a crack fracture immobilization with crepe bandages or casts will help. In case of complete fracture either closed reduction or open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) will help.

You should visit your treating Dr to decide about the further course of treatment.
I hope this is helpful to you.
