Had Anterior Surgery For Cervical Herniated Disc. Having Fever Spikes During Afternoons. Reason?

I had anterior surgery July 23 for cervical herniated disc. Was doing fine until 12 days ago, when I developed a low grade temp - 100.0 Surgeon put me on 5 day antibiotic treatment. Fevers continued even after finishing antibiotic. I have spiked a temp every day for the last 12 days. Saw surgeon Monday for 3 week ck. He did chest xray & a lot of blood tests. Said everything looked fine & all lab work was within normal ranges. Also said xray showed my fusion is healing normally. He can find no reason for the continued fevers daily. I wake in morning with normal temp, but by afternoon, it is always 99.0 - 100.0. I feel horrible when the fever spikes. Energy level has totally decreased in the past 12 days. Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems that you have acquired an infection post surgery and hospitalization. This is usually due to a number of bacterial causes and is commonly seen in hospital practice. In hospitals , it is seen that people during surgery acquire infections. It is also common to acquire infection due to hospitalization such as MRSA or the superbug. This is a sort of infection that is usually seen to be acquired from the hospital by patients. It is important that you do a culture and sensitivity test of you blood. This is a test to detect any infective organisma and find which drug can resolve it. Meanwhile you can take paracetamol adjusted to your weight and age. You can also check with the doctor for any other causes of weakness such as anemia, thyroids etc. You can also take multivitamins and normal diet and see if it helps the weakness.
