Had Hip Replacement. Doing Exercise, Have Limitation Of Lifting Weight. Had Bladder Infection. Suggest?

In feb 2013 I had total hip replacement. Rehab went fine,I am still doing my exercises. I was released by my surgeon in April.

1. Do I still have a limitation of lifting no more than 20 lbs ?

2. I had a bladder infection 2 weeks ago and did not connect the fact that the further into the antibiotic I got the better my hip felt. How do I know when I have an infection that may be affecting my hip ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, you had total riplacement of the hip in april, but you had urinary tract infection, now, means after the complete healing of the hip. The possibility of hip infection from the urinary tract is not possible.
If you have more pain, restriction of movement of the hip you can suspect the infection of the hip. Thank you.

Pain Medicine & Palliative Care Specialist Dr. Kerry Pottinger's  Response
Hi,
At this stage after the surgery, it will be OK to return to normal physical activities. The surgeon has discharged you so there is no obvious concern regarding the hip replacement.
An infection of your hip replacement would be suspected if your joint became excessively painful. swollen or stiff. Also, if there were signs of generalized infection such as fever, high WBC count or general malaise.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, no limitations will be placed after 2 months of a Primary total hip replacement with regard to lifting of weights and the amount of weight that can be lifted is a subjective phenomenon.

Its always mandatory to get immeidiate treatment for any infection in the body as there is a likely possibility of the hip joint getting infected due to hematogenous spread. This is especially true for the first 2 years of Total hip replacement. The general signs of infection of hip include unrelenting pain in the joint and this should be supported by appropriate investigations also.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
