Had Non-productive Cough. Prescribed Albuterol, Codeine & Desothatate. Suggestions

Yes. I have had a non-productive cough for almost two weeks now. I get a cold at least once a year, and always have to take an antibiotic. I am not very fond of antibiotics in less necessary. I feel they could do more harm than good. At least the N.P. was on the same page with me. I try otc medications & increase fluid intake. Lots of rest. etc.. etc... Anyway, my primary Dr. was not available, so I saw a N.P. who prescribed me an albuterol inhaler due to wheezes, but don't have asthma, and a cough syrup with codeine & Desothatate. May net be spelling it correctly, and if in 5 days I don't get better, I could e-mail her & she will prescribe an antibiotic. What are your thoughts?

Hi Thanks for using HCM.
cold at least once a year: Is it the same season or any one and will you wheeze during theses days. 80% of asthma people have allergic rhinites(AR) and 20% of AR will have asthma. So if in same season the chance of AR is more.

For dry cough during cold without wheeze / ronchi, albuterol is not required. This may be due to post nasal drip. Cough syrup with codeine will be good as it is a cough supressant but you also have to take anti inflamatory drugs with anti histamine like Tab.Sinarest. Do salt water gargle. Wish you good health.

Getting a lung function test,a haemogram to rule out eosinophilia ,X-ray of the sinuses to look for chronic sinusitis and Post nasal drip will help understand the underlying pathology.A wheeze is indicative of bronchospasm, hence regular use of the albuterol inhaler along with steroids help reduce the cough. The linctus codiene is a cough suppressants which should be avoided unless the exact aetiology

Welcome to HCM.It would help if you get your Pulmonary Function tests done to evaluate for bronchospasm,a haemogram to look for pulmonary Eosinophilia is also required. The albuterol/salbutamol will need to be taken 6 hourly to control the wheeze.Invariably a bacterial infection accompanies this causing bronchitis ,so a course of antibiotics would be needed,Other causes of cough like chronic sinusitis with post nasal drip and lower respiratory tract infections ,cardiac asthma also needs evaluation.

Welcome to HCM. Antibiotics are not prescribed unless essential, your symptoms are suggestive of a bacterial/viral/fungal infection of the throat or oral cavity leading to cervical lymphadenopathy causing the lumps. Also albuterol/salbutamol needs to be taken 4-5 times daily to prevent bronchospasm.Usually bronchitis accompanies wheezing, hence a short course of antibiotics would be needed along with the bronchodilators.other causes of nonproductive cough like cardiac asthma, post nasal drainage secondary to chronic sinusitis will need to be ruled out.
