Had Open Heart Surgery, Swollen Legs, Redness, Soreness. On Respirator. Suggestion?
I am a 53 yr old female. In October I had open heart surgery. Had a real hard time coming off the respirator anyway, My leg that the took the vanes out of is sooo swollen and red. I have had it checked for blood clots and thank goodness it is that. They seem to be at loss of what to do for my leg. Very very sore and swollen. Is this something I will have to live with the rest of my life?
If there is a clot in your leg after surgery, it is called a deep venous thrombosis. You will need blood thinners for 3-6 months; after that, you and your doctor may decide to come off the blood thinners if there have not been new episodes. You will be at risk for something called post-phlebitic syndrome, characterized by recurrent swelling of the leg, changes in the color of the skin (brownish tan color) and thickening of the skin. Compression stockings, leg elevations and regular activity help.
Hope it helps.
