Hello,

Norethisterone is a type of progesterone. As long as you use it, you are not supposed to have periods. Once you stop it you will get withdrawal bleed. So it is used to postpone menstruation. But once your periods start, the drug can't stop the periods.

OBGYN Dr. Aarti Abraham's  Response
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Norethisterone tablets are often taken to delay or prepone periods , and are meant to be taken well in advance, if you wish to delay your periods.
Ideally they should be started 3 - 4 days before your periods are supposed to start.
That way they have time to produce the hormonal effects needed to delay the periods.
In your case, it appears that you have started it too late.
If the brownish discharge is pre menstrual spotting, there are chances if might stop.
However, if your periods always start with spotting, then the likelihood is that it will progress into a full blown period, and will not respond to Norethisterone tablets.
What you can do is continue taking three tablets of the drug for a day or two, and then wait and see if the bleeding stops.
If it doesnt, then it is too late to do anything about it.
All the best
Take care.
