Had Pneumonectomy Due To Chronic Bronchitis. Weight Loss, Loss Of Appetite And Dizziness. On Oxygen Support. Suggestions?
Father underwent pnemonectomy due to chronic bronchitis in Feb this year and is struggling hard to recover post surgery; his weight has come down, loss of appetite , now a days has spells of dizziness and is down mentally because of the sickness. We put him on Oxygen concentrator to improve oxygen supply during sleep. Kindly tell me if these are common complications of pneumonectomy and what can we do to improve his quality of life? Also, we are concerned about the condition of the second lung as it also has got mild bronchitis.
You have not mentioned the exact disease of the lung for which he has undergone pneumonectomy. All his symptoms are because of surgery as now he has to make do with one lung. You should continue oxygen therapy for as long as possible. He can even be put on non invasive ventilation, esp during sleep which will give rest to his breathing muscles. Avoid infection of any kind as it will worsen his condition. He may be vaccinated with influenza and pneumonia vaccine.Take care of his nutrition and over a period of time he will get used to one lung.
