Had Slipped Disc, Leg Pain, Numbness. Had Lumbar Discectomy. Help?
Hi, i had an L5/S1 lumbar discectomy on 11th October 2012 which was due to a 1.8cm slipped disc and had alot of right sided leg pain and numbess..I still have the numbness down outer side and into foot and can still experience tingling ..Could you tell me if this should have subsided by now or could i have permenant nerve damage? Many thanks Margaret, 38
Hi,thanks for writing to HCM. Generally, a little bit of tingling and numbness is expected after a lumbar discectomy which persists for 2-3 months in few cases and is usually self limiting. This usually results due to excessive manipulation of the nerve root during the surgical procedure. I suggest Methylcobalamine preparations along with Gabapentin for 4 -6 weeks which should provide some symptom relief. If the condition is not improving, you may need "ENMG" (nerve conduction studies) to exclude damage to the peripheral nerves. Hope this helps
